Tarshaughan River

Field Trip to Tarshaughan River 

On Tuesday 23^rdof May 2018 we went on a school field trip to Tarshaughan River. The whole school went and we met Markus, Tommy and Gerry who were our instructors for the day.

First we looked at insects which were taken out of the river and we got an identification chart and tried to identify them. We found lots of Mayflies which proved the water was very good quality. We identified them by looking at their tails - the Mayfly has 3 tails and the stonefly has 2 tails.

As well as mayfly, we also found stone flies, hair worms, Alderfly Larva, many more insects. From the insects we found, we concluded that the water in this river is very healthy and not polluted.

Next Marcus and his team showed us a special fishing rod which was electrified. Tommy carried a power pack on his back and both he and Gerry wore rubber so they wouldn’t get electrocuted while using it in the water. This was used to stun the fish to help get them into the net.  They caught lots of different fish including brown trout, fry of salmon and eels. We examined them and after a while we set them all free back into the river. They were unharmed. We all had an amazing time. It was a glorious day and the sun was shining. It was so peaceful, unspoiled and educational at the Tarshaughan River.
